so my phone is headed for repair and I'm without my phone for about a week or so.
BTW...I had to eventually take it to a local repair place that I've brought other things to with great success, and he took one look at it, asked if I'd seen a grey flickering bar at the top (which I had when trying to get it to reboot) and he said it's Apple's issue and that I'd be better served just having them fix it/replace it.

Yeah it is an Apple issue and they won't own up to completely acknowledge it. They fixed the hardware issue on the newer models. It is not related to software and restoring will not solve the problem.
The only way to fix it temporarily is to flex the phone and hope to temporarily reset the connection in the phone.
