our brains view attacks on our core beliefs the same as someone physically attacking us

arguing over these things is a form of self preservation, and we will naturally gravitate towards like minded people, not only for safety, but also for confirmation of our core beliefs

No. Evolutionary in the sense that belonging to a group (even in today's world) increases chances of survival. It may also increase a sense of well-being. We are not very far along evolutionarily speaking.

I would agree that it's citizens versus the political power structure. As such, the "us versus them" relative to political parties is intellectually lazy.

It's why one pack of chimps kill chimps from another pack. Someone's gonna get the banana. You either control your own destiny or have it controlled. Humans fear the the latter.
