Apart from the scream, there's a couple other stock sound effects I notice in movies and tv all the time and it has the same effect of taking me out of the moment.

There's the little kids laughing sound used when kids are running around in a scene that's always used.

Also, there's a metal hinge swinging sound that you always hear when a jail cell is shut or a some type of large metal door closes.
