My HVAC guy has a some cheap 110 volt window A/C units in all his techs trucks.
When my unit went out on a Thur night they looked at it on Fri. New HVAC unit could not be installed until Mon. They put a loaner 110 volt window unit in my bedroom window free of charge to get me through the weekend. Best damn advertising/service in the the business

absolutely...that is the kind of thing that costs very little, but will probably get 10 more jobs for them through your satisfaction. provide a good service and make people feel like you did a quality job and you will be very successful in this world.

Knew two guys that each had small HVAC companies, maybe 4 or 5 trucks and crews, they both did extremely well.

Do you know how dumb that sounded in my head? I assume you are installing a dehumidifier for the environment that an indoor pool is in.

Seems like the biggest headache of owning a successful HVAC business is the employees. Constantly managing 5-10 guys who just can't get their shite together has got to be stressful. And if you do find someone who has their shite together, what is stopping him cutting out the middleman and going into business for himself?

Worked HVAC for 4 years, first as a training technician for a small company that did residential/light commercial, then for a much larger company that did everything from light residential to large commercial chiller work.
If you're willing to do some grunt work for a couple years for a larger company, and learn the ropes, and if you have any kind of business sense and sales ability, you can run your own business, and with the right business environment (I.E., anywhere south of the Mason Dixon), you can reasonably expect a 6 figure income.
You have to have the drive to run your own business and the ability to train the right helpers.
I mean this with all sincerity - despite the 150 degree attics, I miss the work. I know I would have been successful if I had stuck with it, but I incorrectly believed finishing school would have led me down a more successful career path.

No doubt. I personally worked with a guy who used to snort coke off a Maxim magazine in the company truck, and if you live in Baton Rouge, this company has likely worked on your home or your place of business.
The dream you should have if you start your own business is to bring on a guy who will learn the trade, be encouraged by any rewards and commissions you offer him by selling more equipment, and eventually has the desire to buy your business when you retire.
I had the opportunity to buy a business, and I took a pass. Biggest mistake of my professional life thus far.

Yeah those 110 units are about $150. He runs one truck/tech on Sat & Sun. If a weekend call out is not a simple fix the tech takes 10 minutes to install the loaner window a/c and tells the customer we will see you first thing Mon. morning to get your a/c back up and running.

There is going to be a shite load of HVAC work in the next several years. Everybody will have to convert from freon 22 systems to 410A systems. There will be a lot of money to be made by good quality AC companies!!

Friend is licensed comm and res doing it on the skids he makes over $100k just doing that. He always working between his day job for the benefits and doing Ac work in the side.

Commercial is where it's at if you really want to drag in the money.

My cousin just got started with a company making $23/hr out the gate with overtime when he wants and great benifits. Had less than 6 months experience in HVAC prior. Not too bad considering.

I did plumbing and HVAC work while I was in college. I really enjoyed it 90 percent of the time, but the bad days were some of the worst I've ever had. As a tech, you eke out a decent living. As an owner, you can bank if you know how to run a business.

What a stupid post. You can make a solid living in HVAC.

If you stay busy, easily over 100 K per year

I know 2 guys personally who own HVAC businesses. Both were passed down by their family, but they live a VERY comfortable life (no pun intended). Neither of them are truck guys, but both own multiple sports cars, including some "classics". In south Louisiana, AC business will always be good, even in the off-season. I'm not in the business, but it would seem like the biggest challenge for a new one would be establishing reputation and a client base.

One of my buddy's dads does just this. The son drives a nicer truck than most middle aged adults

My boy's older brother started his own business a couple years ago in south texas (year round market practically in terms of AC) and is doing well. Has a tricked out Astro van for his work vehicle
