Nobody's figured out that offering a high performance diesel in expensive trim levels of light duty trucks isn't going to sell.
Honest question, do they actually want them to work? I honestly don't think they do. Frankly, none of the big guys are really huge diesel motor guys. They would all prefer gas IMO, I mean look at Dodge and Nissan don't even make their own diesels. So financially they'd rather you buy a gasser. A huge sector of the diesel market is commercial vehicles that are going to replace them every X amount of years anyway also.
IMO the tech just isn't there yet to slam out a full size truck that can put out a game changing number mileage wise which IMO starts with a 3. So until it does, I don't think the market is there for a 1/2 ton low diesel that does 25 mpg. Most would rather a gasser that does 16-18 at this point.

The tech is very much there to achieve mid to high 30's in a full size truck. The manufacturers are not willing to sacrifice the performance which we have all become accustomed to. They think (justifiably so) that the consumer will not pay a higher price for less performance or less luxury. They don't want to screw the market up by dropping margins on what is considered the "premium" engine offering because it would kill the sales on the gas engine that is priced above it. So we get high performance diesels in high trim levels at a high price. They want the fuel mileage, but it plays 3rd fiddle to performance and luxury.
