Modern identity politics was invented by LBJ
LBJ just exploited identity for political gain more effectively than many of his predecessors. But he was hardly the first.

I'm a hard core conservative and I hate the race baiting, but identity politics is kinda the base of modern politics, you identify what group you can count on, which group you can move, etc. Great example is the Reagan Democrat-white, blue collar, Catholic, usually rural voters from the North.
