Maybe let's stop focusing on the semantics and the official titles of the police officers, and examine their role in today's world.
This is the second terrorist attack in a large British city in about a month, there have been incidents all across Europe recently (past several years), it's an ongoing issue in today's society.
It certainly sounds like there were "officers" on site, right at the very beginning of the incident. If they were injured trying to disarm a man with a knife, then bravo to them for their courage, and shame on the government that put these unarmed men out there in that situation. Like someone said, even a baseball bat would have been an upgrade over the tools they had to work with.
Issuing a police officer a pistol and training him to use it won't turn him/her into a monster, despite the propaganda we hear around here in the US. The vast majority "protect and serve", with pride.
Given the world we live in, it's the least a responsible government can do for it's populace.
