By the numbers NBA peaked in the 90's.

They kept extending the playoffs riding that Jordan wave but the wave fizzled out.

The problem with the NBA - contrary to the NFL - is that it built its brand and model not on the sport itself...NBA almost never ever ever markets the sport of basketball...

It built its brand on stardom.

You watch that Magic and Bird documentary...and the NBC guys admit...they only sold Magic and Bird because they were instant stars...and every game they broadcast..was some team vs. Celtics, some team vs. Lakers and that was the Sunday double-header...EVERY WEEKEND.

NBA needs transcendent players to make a buck and that's a poor business model...relying on Jordan and Kobe and LeBron.

that is ironical, if you are trying to insinuate that it wasn't like this in the 90s

the NBA peaked in the 90s b/c of Jordan, and that's b/c it was marketed around Jordan

before Jordan, the NBA wasn't on the map nearly as strongly as today
