Faced with an urgent shortage of workers, California farmers are desperate to be heard.

quote:

If we can’t change the way we’re doing business, we’re at risk,” said Brad Goehring, a fourth-generation wine grape grower in Lodi.

The state has been struggling with this farm labor shortage issue for years, but it’s gotten to a point where farmers are fed-up.

quote:

As harvesting season gets underway, many growers in need of workers fear they may lose their crops, and President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigration orders appears to only make matters worse.

Goehring says it’s become more and more difficult to find people to do this work.

“It’s been a real struggle and it’s been increasing the last 5-6 years,” he said.

Goehring is among the growing number of agricultural businessmen in California who have tried a number of strategies to lure workers. From putting ads in the paper to offering benefits- such as health insurance and 401(k)s, Goehring has even increased pay on certain jobs up to $22 an hour.

From the hand out lines to making North of $20/hr with full benefits.

It's capitalism fricking awesome?

But muh bell peppers!

People on this board badmouth food stamps but they do a lot of good - the look of pure happiness on my kids' faces when I whip out the ebt card and tell them we're going to Tony's for boiled crawfish, hell, they can't load up in the escalade fast enough!

I was assured that we needed illegal immigrants to perform farming duties because the pay was too low.

Bottom line is that for this type of labor which is seasonal, the American workers as a whole are inferior. And if they are receiving food stamps, they are more likely to be living in an urban area away from the farms. The only sane way is to offer some kind of work visa to the Mexicans, who will actually do work instead of sitting on their arse, and not try to fix a system that works well. Nebraska is having the same problem with their feedlots. How many hours per week are you willing to move to Nebraska and shovel manure in less than ideal conditions?

No shite. People get decent pay to not work, why would they want a paycut and an added 40 hrs a week?

How about just get your own unskilled citizens to do unskilled labor.

Unskilled labor isn't some derogatory term, it just means you haven't learned a trade yet. Learn one if you want, don't if you don't.

It makes no sense to make the population pay more in taxes to support unskilled and unemployed Americans while importing immigrants to actually do the unskilled labor. Who by the way also receive federal benefits paid for by tax payers.

Cut out the fricking middle man that wants to keep touching all the money and give it out like an allowance

Here's an idea, and I don't know much about farming, but maybe plant less fricking crops?

But this makes a good argument in favor of differently documented immigrants. There remain jobs that Americans won't do.
