What if there is no narrative and they're just writing stories about leaks regardless of who they help or hurt because that's what they do?
THey have no interest in having POTUS Trump impeached. History would correctly judge the WaPo and NYT as participating in a soft coup with the Democratic Party to bring down a democratically elected president.
They DO NOT want this.
They simply want to bog down his presidency with a "thousand cuts" to prevent him from enacting his policies and make the public disenchanted enough to vote his party out in 2018 and render him powerless.

I think you nailed it. But I still think the WaPo story is their cognitively impaired way of covering for the Comey Clinton cover up by saying Russia created the email about obstruction from AG Lynch regarding the HRC emails.
These people think it was brilliant to leak that Comey hid behind drapes...
