Don't have a problem with running out of hot water. We have a unit that is 11yrs old and has a bad element.

Trying to decide if it's time to just replace the thing

Well unless you have an extra grand or two you just NEED to get rid of, just spend the $450 on a new electric tank and go about your life.
However if you have nat gas then you could save some money in the long run by switching to a gas tank heater. But plumbing everything in new plus a vent is a pretty big job and probably not worth it. Especially if nat gas gets more expensive in a few years.


ETA, Savings from electric to gas is more then I originally thought. Here are the energy guides from a comparable 50gal electric and a 50gal nat gas. May be worth your time after all. Just know whats involved in venting/plumbing in a gas unit.:
