Technically, Dracula Untold (23% w/a 4.4/10 avg on RT) kicked off the Dark Universe franchise. Even though that made $219m world wide on a $70m budget for a modest profit it apparently wasn't enough for Universal to continue with it though. It's odd though as Luke Evans recently said he was in talks to be in the expanded DU while Mummy director straight up came out and said Dracula Untold is non canon.

I guess w/that kind of behind the scenes confusion we shouldn't be surprised if this flick is a mess.

They're basing an action franchise on a series of films that weren't an action franchise.

With the exception of the Wolf Man, these were slow paced horror/thrillers, not action films.

You could easily increase the pace of The Creature from the Black Lagoon with CGI, but an action Frankenstein or Invisible Man are just laughable.

Supposedly they did rewrites on Dracula Untold that allowed for it to be included in the universe if they desired to and that the ending scenes "hinted" at a connection, but that they ultimately decided to not include it in the universe.
