75% seems high, but I really don't think 50%+ is that uncommon pretty much everywhere. I tried to research this one time several years back and it was really hard to find any data on murder solve rates. I'm sure you can do what you just did and compare arrests/convictions to murders, but it didn't look like any police departments were bragging about their solve rates like DAs brag about their conviction rates.
Crime pays because it's likely you can get away with it and the only realistic solution is Big Brother.
