In their minds, he does no wrong. He's the perpetual victim. If they begin to think he might be in the wrong, they bring in the "But Hillary" argument. They can't comprehend that its possible that a lot of this self-inflicted. Trump has been a treasure trove of gaffes, mis-statements, etc. He doesn't have discipline or self-control and it should be of no surprise that things of this nature happen.

Even on this board, you probably have people right now who are saying "we'll fight to the death for you!" who were 4 hours ago saying "this isn't good, he may have messed up."
It's all emotion. He hooked them through an emotional, taking back our way of life message. I'd compare it to the way a scam pastor ropes poor people into paying for a helicopter.
