I think that's still misdemeanor theft at that point, and (disregarding the statue stuff) NOLA has a whole lot more to worry about than misdemeanors.

In a town I used to live in that wasn't crime-addled, the cops were overjoyed to have security footage of a $17 fraudulent purchase at the gas station.

Just because we have a lot to worry about doesn't mean shite is being done about those bigger issues. If the NOPD has the resources to put multiple cops under the overpass by Lee Circle to hand out brake tag tickets all the time, then they certainly have the resources to go after criminals who are stealing from people.

I guess that's not where the money is at, but if you ignore people who steal from others, you're only motivating them to do bigger crimes.
