Not for us.

Neither World War I or World War II were particularly depressing for us. Yeah, we mourned the loss of hundreds of thousands of our finest Americans, but beyond that, neither war really impacted the country's infrastructure.

While World War I was devastating to Europe in terms of loss of life, most of the European infrastructure remained intact (northern France excluded). But while World War I only ruined northern France and other small pockets of Europe, World War II effected virtually every country on that continent. Entire cities were obliterated in France, Germany, Britain, the Balkans, Poland, and Russia.

I agree that World War I was without a doubt the most pointless war of the 20th century. But most depressing? Nah...World War II touched the common man on a terrifying scale unheard of or unseen before or since.

Yeah, the trenches fricking sucked and it seemed entirely pointless, but the images of World War 2 and the devastation left behind makes it the worst. It was humanity at its best and worst.

The main difference between World War I and World War II is as follows:

World War I - Let's see how many men we can kill in the most horrible ways possible.

World War II - Worldwide battle between good and evil fighting for the soul of humanity.

In fact, you could make a compelling argument that World War I set the conditions that made World War II happen.
