What on this blue/green orb possessed them to place the story during WORLD WAR ONE!?

If there's one thing I'm sick of, it's the cliche of using World War One as a setting for character origin stories. I mean, I'm just sick of how overused it is. Every time I turn around, I'm like, oh, another movie set in the trenches. Ho hum.

I dunno, somehow a superhero story set before the invention of antibiotics seems just sort of weird.

If your argument for placing a story in WWI is novelty, a whole bunch of film makers have avoided the novelty of it perhaps for the reason I say - World War One is the single most depressing event in history.

Six million dead soldiers and the main outcome is the rise of the Nazis.

I don't know. World War I claimed the lives of 17 million people all told. World War II claimed the lives of 60-80 million people, with the majority of those deaths being civilians (with a good many of them victims of mass genocide).

I think the Second World War gives the First World War a run for its money in terms of depression.

I mean, Magneto's origin story features Auschwitz.
