There are blacks who look one hell of a lot whiter than Obama who were never considered white (look at some black members of families in Louisiana like the Honores and Darensbourgs or someone like Harold Ford).
Are you 100% convinced that the image of the birth certificate produced was an absolutely true representation of the original???

If it could happen anywhere it would probably have been Hawaii - they had only recently been granted statehood and they may have been struggling with the aftermath of that. I'm unfamiliar with whether or not "colored" may have been the default situation if one had 'black blood' as it was in the south at that time.
