I remember my father was an operator at DOW for years in early/mid 90s and once a month would come through and pay the overdue balances for all the kids in my class at our private school even though they'd never cut the children off.

From the 3rd to the 6th grade I basically never had a school lunch.
Why those years? because when I was in the 3rd grade bussing and forced school integration started.
For a 4 year period I had my lunch or bag lunches beat out of me daily.
I survived that hell other people can miss a lunch or 2.
