They're gonna tell you it's because they use hydrazine as a monopropellant since carrying bipropellants for such long space journeys that don't get resupplied isn't space or weight efficient, but hydrazine is extremely toxic. But we all know

Because they read "The Andromeda Strain".
I'm pretty sure NASA quarantined the first astronauts, or maybe it was crews that had an EVA, after they returned home. Didn't want them bring back some kind of scary space virus that might wipe out humanity.
