And Troy wasn't all that bad. But not great either.

I just don't get why it doesn't work on screen or why people are afraid of that period.

You would think the Battle of Gaugamela or Marathon would be an epic story just in of itself...the backdrop, the major players, the battle and the aftermath, how it changed history.

I'm surprised we don't see more historical epics of the great female leaders. Boudicca or the Empress Theodora, etc. It would fit the PC culture and there really are some great stories. A steamy big budget biopic on Marie Laveau would rake in the money.

Yes it was.

Dude's right. They never make a good antiquity movie. Kingdom of Heaven is set during the Crusades, which I don't consider to be real antiquity.

Kubrick's Spartacus is good, but that's about it.

But Excalibur is awesome, and pretty much takes care of all my King Arthur needs. It's far from "accurate," though. The real Arthur, if he existed, would have lived some time in the 7th to 8th centuries. They didn't even have plate armor back then, and one of the Saints that Arthur swears by when he is knighted hadn't even been born.

It's expensive to film these kinds of movies.

Because it's expensive to make and if it doesn't work it'll bomb badly and they won't ever recoup their money.

The old school Hollywood epics of yesteryear will more than likely never be seen again.
