The real question is why can't they make a great antiquity war movie?
I'm with you. There are countless interesting battles and events littered through history, but instead we get a WWII movie every year. I guess they're expensive to make and not as popular. How badass would these be in a R rated big budget movie: Peloponnesian War, Jewish revolt in 70, Babylon toppling Assyria, Persia toppling Babylon, Maccabean revolt...
Kingdom of Heaven wasn't bad.
I love 300 although I know it's obviously a graphic novel.
Ironclad, Arn, and Black Death are very good Middle Ages movies but none are epic.
Ben Hur, Spartacus, and Gladiator are all I got for Roman.
The 1st, 3rd and 4th Crusades would each make incredible movies or miniseries.

And Troy wasn't all that bad. But not great either.
I just don't get why it doesn't work on screen or why people are afraid of that period.
You would think the Battle of Gaugamela or Marathon would be an epic story just in of itself...the backdrop, the major players, the battle and the aftermath, how it changed history.
