My FIL took us all on a Disney Cruise a couple years ago and my youngest was 3 then. I think the cruises are easier on the younger kids than the parks as everything is right there. Lines are shorter for the characters, the shows are great for adults and kids, they have a movie theater on the ships showing different movies including brand new ones(we saw Big Hero 6 the day it opened nationwide). Also the kids club on the ship is a blast for them, our two never wanted to leave. I'm not a cruise guy so I would rather visit the parks for myself but I did have fun as the water slides are a blast and when we went Disney still had the old rule of guests being allowed to bring unlimited alcohol onboard in your checked bags which saved me a lot of money, haha.

Our kids don't really remember the trip or any trip at they age but my wife makes photo books from our trips and they love looking at them and seeing what they did. If you didn't know at WDW kids under 3 get free park admission and can eat free at buffets and family style served restaurants so the costs may balance out about the same as a cruise.

Strongly recommend doing Palo and Remi if you like fine dinning. The service on DCL is second to none. Kids club is great for those with younger kids, mine are 4,6 so it was great to check them in and give us some free time. We had a great time and I hate cruises. The adult only section is really nice.

My wife and I were strong supporters of taking our daughter as much as we could under the age of 3 (free) and while she was in a stroller. Once they get to be 6-11 or so it's hard on them walking 6-11 miles a day so cruises make sense.

We still hit the parks at least once a year with our little one but our days are scheduled much differently now.

The other advantage I like with the cruises is if you have to wait till the kids are out of school to go on vacation you won't nearly feel the effects of a full ship like you will a full park. Mid summer in the parks is miserable.
