Sorta.
The Japanese sent an invasion for to Port Moresby which is in Papua New Guinea.
That would have put their bomber aircraft well within range of Northern Australia.
We sent two carrier groups to stop them.
It was a japanese tactical victory but an allied strategic one as we lost Lexington.
What made this battle significant was it was the first time opposing navies battled beyond the horizon.
It also cost the Japanese at Midway as their two carriers were in the yards at the time of that battle.
And yes the Aussies love us...(as my port call at Perth showed me in 89).
