Move around till you find catfish. Pound the banks for bass in the interstate canal.

Appreciate it ,I'm also in the market for a new boat and trying to decide on the best type for this area.Any good saltwater options within striking distance?

Sometimes the trout will come in during the late fall and winter. I've caught redfish pretty much year round in that area lately.

Northshorefishing reports is a website dedicated to fishing that area.
This is just some of the areas you can fish.
1. Tickfaw and area waterways connected to it. The river has cooler water and fish main river early early early before the skiers in the summer. Look for runouts and want North wind over a SE wind.
2. Bayou Lacombe- after a rain it does not muddy up as much as bigger SE Louisiana rivers. You can catch bass up North closer to the town and specks & reds toward the lake.
There is a tackle store off the main road in town and they have the some locals guys come in periodically talking about how to fish the area.
3. I-55 canals and North pass have bass. Tides and wind can either help you or hurt you. I done well on small minnow type lures.
4.You have Pearl River not that far away. You can catch decent bass, reds, and specks all during one trip.
5. Lake Pontchtrain is a great fishery during certain times of the year.

That's a good list johnny. I'll add a couple to the list.
6. Ruddock area has been known to have great bass, bream, and sacaperch fishing at certain times.
7. catfishing around the bridge at Manchac and in the pass can be good to really good when the conditions are right.

That's some good eating right there. It probably helps that I've been fishing there for about 40 yrs. I know a few tricks

I found a video on youtube of some fellas trolling near the bank headed from the lake to the pass and picking up a few nice size reds....that's on my to do list.

If you look at a topo map right there is a big flat near the bridge going into the lake.
One warning if you enter a canal from the lake. Never never never run off course of the canal. Line up straight with the canal due to they got big stumps that you cannot see close to each side of the entrance. I recommend you go at idle when entering canals like Ruddock. Reserve canal, prairie canal, and oil field canal. Once you learn them then you can run on plane into the canal.

If you've been fishing there for that long then you knew my grandpa. He was one of the old timers that fished commercially and had a camp in the south pass.
I haven't been down there in quite some time, but we used to catch croaker, specs, and blue cat. We'd use soft shell crab and catalpa worms. We typically did very well under 55 near the pilot canal. Two other spots we used to hit were in front of SELU's research station by the north pass/south pass junction and where the south pass hits Pontchartrain.

I've seen a few people reference specs in winter... I'm assuming You need a no rain for at least a week or so?

Black with blue tail worm rigged Texas style in Owl Bayou during the spring if chasing bass.

I’ve always wondered about catching crappie in the 51 canals. Has anyone ever targeted them or just catch a random few fishing for bass?
