I agree. As a father and husband, my first thought would be about them. Second thought, get out of this safely for my employees and me.

But ...

Does your opinion change if the cash drawer was near $1000? Or let it go no matter what?

This. Unless he's acting erratically, in this situation you'd have to be an idiot to escalate the situation.
