Thanks Hogdaddy. Surprised it took someone this long to advise checking the circuit before pecking away at wires. ALWAYS use an outlet tester or some sort of meter before putting your hands on bare metal.
Also, if you had multiple wires, including a red wire, you have a light with two switches wired as a three-way like this:
Your general standard switches and outlets will have 3 conductors in them: white, black, and a ground (green or bare copper).

He said he had black, white, red and green in the ceiling box and that's all. That's what people usually run so they can switch them separately.
