Gaiman is my absolute favorite writer and Heinlein is up there, so we have similar tastes.
I recently read The Shining - my first King novel - and I had the same issues you're describing. I finished it, and it was good, but god DAMN nothing of importance seemed to happen until page 500 something. He will drag the exposition on...and on...
It was good, but I definitely had to power through some parts.
It's more than I can say for any of the 6 or 7 times I've tried to read GoT. I can't get through GRRM's thicket of description.
