It's not that far fetched.
For example, I have been tipping 15-20% (up to 25% on smaller tabs) for the past few years regardless of service; and I thought that was great.
Well I read a thread here recently where apparently 20% is the new norm, I definitely wasn't aware of that etiquette and I have since adjusted.
Like he said some people just don't know.
