If you are registered with Selective Service and you're in college and you get selected , you can only defer until the end of the semester (I think)
When I was at LSU, my "plan" if a draft had occurred was to join the Air Force ROTC or simply enlist in the Air Force or Navy.

I think you can defer until the end of the year if you are supposed to graduate that year.

My plan was also to join the Air Force, and I came very close. My class was the last one drafted in the early 70's. My Draft lottery number was 47. Nixon stopped the war and draft right before they got to me. There was a time that being in college would get you either deferred or off. However, that a-hole LBJ ended that during the latter part of his administration. If an actual draft were to be instituted, I would imagine new rules would be written for its conduct and conscription given that we are fighting in a different world than when we were in Viet Nam. Up to this point, the all volunteer army seems to be working and as long as the economy limps along, it will.
To respond to another poster's question, yes we did a lottery for a given birth year. It would be done in Congress and was nationally televised. We all skipped classes that day and held a draft party in my dorm room while we watched.
