I recall motorguide had issues with the circuit boards a while back that caused the motors to not work, turn on and off by themselves, and sometimes only run on half or 1/4 power.
my guess is you have a bad circuit board in your head unit, shouldn't be a huge repair cost I would think. finding a motorguide place to get it repaired at I wouldn't know about
