He may be more salesman than coach, but if he has the charisma to sell his 2 former players on playing for him in the NBA, then you give him the best assistants you can afford and hope for the best. Talent > Coaching in the NBA so if Cal can deliver Cousins/AD and maybe eventually Wall, I can't think of any available coaching candidate that would lead to better results.

Whether Cal is a trump card that can deliver his former players is a question that we can't answer, but the team should have enough exposure to Cal and AD's opinion of him that they should know. And if he's not then you need another big name that you can sell AD/DC on. Maybe that's JVG, maybe it's Messina, maybe it's someone that becomes available next year. Maybe Dallas strikes out in FA, decides to finally let Dirk retire to rebuild and a difference making coach like Rick Carlisle is suddenly available.

I'm using Cal as the obvious example, the basic point of now not being the time to play your trump card still remains.
