A statement by Jeff Ashton at the end of the third episode was the most telling about how she was found not guilty. During jury selection a large majority of people were absolutely convinced she was guilty, and were exempt from jury duty, so that the people that were picked were convinced that she was not guilty or nothing they could say would persuade them that she did it.

That's basically a cop-out. She wasn't convicted because he and his team were incompetent and over-charged her. They should have pushed for 2nd degree murder at most, because that's the most they could hope to prove. Instead, they insisted on swinging for the fences and struck out on three straight pitches in the dirt.
