Not defending UA, but was it them that did the discrediting or was it some "fact-checking" slimeball journalist working for the mainstream media?

I don't know but everipedia.com says it is a malicious move by United Airlines' legal team in a bid to smear Dao's name.

Nobody knows. But I wouldn't put this type of slime ball PR move past United tbh.
