It's because the courts don't care about your Debt load save a prior judgment for Child Support(i have unique experience in that).

I agree it's very 'unfair' to only look at one's income and not debt load b/c the non-residential parent leaving(usually dad) usually has a shite ton of new debt/rent/bills to pay.

they also disregard the fact that the income is taxable
