Sounds like a small enough surge that the TV produced enough of a resistance to stop the rest of your electronics from frying.

This also depends on the joule rating on the power strip. If it isn't one with a large outside impedance then yeah then what I said above becomes an even higher probability.

The remote lights up because its on its own circuit and is just pumping RF to the IR receiver on the tv.

A 32 inch should set you back much though. Im sure one can be had for 150 bucks or less.

Another weird thing my tv has been doing is when I switch inputs to my PS4, sometimes the picture doesn't come back when I switch back. I have the PS4 on for usually 3-5 hours playing or watching netflix. Sometimes when I switch back to cable the picture doesn't come back but the sound does. To fix this, I press the guide button on the remote and then switch back to normal view. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't I have to turn the tv off then back on, press the guide button, then switch back to normal view. Its really annoying. I don't know if that means my tv was dying to begin with or just some weird glitch with Cox's system.
