Fastpitch softball scenario:
Bottom of last inning and tie ballgame. Runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Batter hits ball to deep right center field and center fielder makes a diving catch. Runner on 2nd tags up and scores winning run but runner on 1st never tagged and was between 1st and 2nd base when winning run scored so she takes off to celebrate with team at home plate. Other team appeals no tag at 1st base and runner is called out but umpires say run counts because the runner crossed the plate before the appeal was made. Is this the right call??

Yes. Run counts.

The base runner is forced out at first, so I would think the runner scoring from second doesn't count.

Disclaimer: Haven't umpired since the summer after high school

I just looked it up, and I'm wrong. Evidently the appeal is a "time play" instead of a force out, so the run stays on the board.

If the tag to first base was applied AFTER the runner from second scored then yes the run counts.

The appeal requires the base to be tagged and is not an automatic call by the umpire. The run counts and the out is considered a force/tag out in real time.

How do you expect any of them to be able to see to read what's on here?

I don't claim perfect recall but did ump for 9 years. I scrolled down and here is what I think is the best reasoning:

"That is not a "force".. the base runner messed up and left a base.. a "force" is when the base runner has to leave the base... since there was no force, the run counts."

the base runner at first was NOT forced to second because the ball was caught in the air. Contrast with a runner at first who, say, didn't run on a ground ball, watches a play at home, starts to celebrate and is thrown out at second. That would be a force out and the runner crossing home first would not matter. So, in your scenario, you have a time play and the run counts.

There is a different scenario I have seen where the run would not count.

Two outs, runner on second base. Batter hit a gapper to right-center field and runner scores easily. Knowing the runner was going to score, and knowing it is a walk-off, the batter runs half-way to first base and the retreats towards home to start celebrating with the runner when he crosses home plate. Long after runner crosses home plate the right fielder throws the ball to first base to record the force out. Run doesn't count. Third out of the inning.
