My brother sent me a copy of the newsletter from his range in Lafayette about the 15-22 having problems with "out of battery discharges causing shooter injury, but also runaways and firing on safety." According to the newsletter, many ranges, including that one in Lafayette, are prohibiting the use of the 15-22 at ranges until Smith and Wesson investigates these reported issues and issues an official corrective action if necessary. I have never had a problem with mine, but just wanted to give all of you a heads up. Has anyone else heard of this?

15-22's had the OOB issue early on, but Smith and Wesson has had that issue addressed for some time now. Don't know about a runaway issue.

I posted here a while back about my 15-22 having an out of battery discharge. My uncle and I had brought it to the hunting lease with us while doing some scouting. We decided to shoot a few rds while we were there. We didn't have hearing protection because it's 22LR and we didn't plan to shoot too much. He was shooting, while I was standing a few feet away at his 5 o'clock, and had an OOBD during one of his first few shots. The explosion was probably the loudest thing I've ever heard in my life. My ears rang for a few days after that. I'll never not wear hearing protection again regardless of what I'm shooting. Not sure what caused the OOBD, but it could have a lot to do with the ammo I was shooting. We were shooting Rem. Golden Bullets at the time. I later found out from S&W that the 15-22 is really picky about what time of ammo you feed it. Since then I've ran nothing but premium ammo through it and haven't had any issues.

Going to an Appleseed shooting clinic this weekend and they have the 15-22 ban in place as well.

I got that news letter from my range in laffy as well. Sucks I just picked up a new mlok version. I had read on he S&W forum about the runaway thing and it seems the range officer did some work on the gun and then it did its runaway. I forget the reason he did work on the gun for someone at the range. They also said it might be the trigger group got loose from the pins walking or the holes loosening up. I have a Elftmann trigger in it now and is pretty locked in place. I'll be aware of it tho.
