Well, it wasn't blacks who denied themselves of sitting in front of buses, drinking from separate water fountains, voting, going to world renowned universities, or the other basic opportunities? that we take for granted today.

No. I believe it was our other ancestors who did that.

You are correct. And you make some other good points.

However, if you ask an African America if they feel bad about the beating the old white guy took at the hands of the young black guys, they will say "No. They had nothing to do with it, and it was not their responsibility." Most would probably feel bad about what happen and even agree that the young thugs deserve to face time in jail.

That is how most white people feel about slavery. it was a horrific chapter in our history. Absolutely morally wrong. I think most, if not all white people (I give exception to the obvious racists) would say they are horrified by slavery and feel bad about it. However, we had nothing to do with it. Further, most did not have any ancestors that owned slaves.

Most on this board were not alive in the 1950's or 19060's, either. how far back are we going to go? Do we make Africans feel responsible for the raids along the Italian coast that their ancestors did while raping, pillaging and taking slaves? How about native Americans? Do they need to apologize and feel bad when they attacked other Native American villages taking slaves and wiping out entire villages?

At some point it has to be let go and considered to be in the past? Forget? No. But to hold an entire group of people responsible for acts created centuries before they were born is unheard of. If we don't let go and concentrate on how to make the present a better place we will always wallow in the past and play the blame game against those who have long been dead.

You'd be surprised. A lot of people from that era are still breathing and kicking. Racism and discrimination was real to them. Their scars and stories are real and alive.

Agreed. But is it appropriate to let it go now considering that there are still African Americans alive that experienced Jim Crow laws?

Nobody is saying we should hold anyone responsible. But we do have to admit that the sins of our forefathers can still be felt in society today.

Completely disagree. Segregation should always be remembered as a sad period in our history. It should especially be taught in college campuses that have set up these "safe spaces" that are designed to drown out opposing views. Theyre just wrong.

We are extremely divided as a country and both the left and right are no longer conpromising. Both sides have fallen off their deep ends and protests have turned violent. This country is more divided than ever before and we need to look at history to understand the consequences of what we are currently doing.
