When are consoles and PC's going to switch away from using a compact disk (CD) ???

There are so many problems with them. They break and scratch easily. The fact that the bottom side of a CD is open to being tampered with is obviously the huge flaw. (Nothing new here)
Why haven't we transferred over to something more durable ?

It's called digital? And they both have been doing it for awhile now...
Most PC's built don't even have disc drives anymore, including mine.

Edit: in my native country, this is a complement.

I haven't purchased a physical disk since I have gotten my Xbox One.
So I would say we are at the switch now.

Retail has kept physical media alive.
The companies need an outlet to push their hardware so they have to keep them happy to a certain extent. Pushing physical media is one way to do that.
Ultimately, digital distribution is too convenient but there are still customers who prefer physical.

I was able to snag BF1 early edition for $30 on amazon last week after I missed the sale on XBL. Sometimes it's worth checking if the physical copy is cheaper, especially if you have Prime and can get it in 1-2 days.

People on PCs are pretty much 99% digital downloads, especially for Steam and Origin. I have a Blu Ray drive that I installed on the PC that I built, but I've only used it once.

Agreed. It's the only reason I get physical discs. Whether it's Prime's 20% off new releases, finding a used version on eBay, etc., you can save a lot more money over the digital versions.

i still prefer having the actual discs for console games. because i'm a cheapass and am not willing to pony up money on a bigger HDD for my consoles when that money could be spent on more games

ugh I know. If only there were some way that we could just magically have the game beamed into our systems.
