Thoughts? We could have at least frozen the current defense budget for a couple of years and given some time for the DOD to come up with a list of wasteful programs that they could cut. Increased spending should have come after they proved that they can indeed cut the fat and focus spending on the best ROI programs.

The military industrial complex is made stronger by the strangulation of federal hiring. Institutional knowledge in defense programs shifts ever more to the contractors due to fewer and fewer feds and military rotating out every 3 or so years

You do know a 1/4 of the $560 billion in the budget is for salaries and benefits including retirees.Do you want to go after that?

You REALLY want to save money on almost ALL government procurement including DOD?Do away with 8A contracting.
It will save BILLIONS.I deal with federal contracts occasionally and it drives up costs by a minimum 10% on every contract I've been involved with.My last was over $2.3 million.

8A's are a complete scam and the ones I've dealt with don't even employ the people they are designed to help.

No, it's a white-collar welfare / jobs program.

Some defense companies have offices in every congressional district, so that any cut in the budget will directly effect constituents and potentially cost someone a congressional seat.

When you learn that, it's hard not to see defense spending as a sham.

No. If they were an entitlement the liberals would have no problem giving them the bump.
