Kermit is not in my top 5 choices, but the guy is an excellent coach. If he is the fall back pick, we are in good shape.
You can't judge these coaches in the one-bid leagues by NCAA appearances only. They can have a great season, and lose in their conference tournament and not make the NCAA.
He also built that program, so it is more accurate to judge him by the last five or six seasons there. Especially when you are comparing him to other coaches at similar schools who only have a 3-5 year track record.
Kermit is 153-52 (66%) over the last 6 seasons and 85-21 in conference (75%). Made the post season 5 times (3 NCAA, 1 NIT, 1 CIT). The one time they didn't make the tournament, MTSU won the conference at 13-3 and lost in the conference tournament. The previous 9 years there, he finished second or third in the conference 8 times. He has never had a losing record there. Over the last two seasons MTSU is 5-0 against the SEC and Big 10.
The only argument against him, really, is that he failed as a young coach at Texas A&M almost 30 years ago and committed some NCAA violations.
He was a head coach at Idaho at age 28 and went to two straight NCAA tournaments.
Also, a perceived negative is that he has been at MTSU so long, no one must want him and he is 57.
Jim Larranaga at Miami got his first P5 job at 61 and is doing well.
I would like Prohm, Chris Collins, Wojo, Brey (if that's real), even Joe Dooley at FGCU is a great coach with a Kansas background.
But, if we end up with Kermit I will not be disappointed.
