Initially i'll have a finger on the line, but once i start having to reel to work slowly back to the boat, i pretty much abandon that.

Light bites are typical this time of year, but changing to 8lb nanofil or gliss would help a lot too. Mono is a poor conductor of hits vs a unifilament like the ones I mentioned.

It also could help to only use the rod to slowly drag the worm back, only use the reel to take up the slack created by dragging it.
