My only hope is that 996's stay artificially low (relative to their performance/drivability/reliability) because porsche purists hate them for their water cooled engines and the scrambled egg headlights.

I bought a new 991 CS a little over a year ago...It has had zero issues at 40k miles...bulletproof.
It is the last of the naturally aspirated motors, as the 2017 models all saw a turbo. There will be a growing interest in the naturally aspirated motors soon just as there is a fan base of the last of the air cooled from 1996.
I am done with the German car merry go round...there is nothing like a 911.
