I would encourage anyone here who believes that Clapton is a mediocre talent, to find the Austin City Limits tribute to SRV. At the end of the show, Clapton, King, Bonnie Raitt, Neil Schon, Jimmy Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray all joined in for an All Star jam to end the show. Guys, Eric Clapton absolutely fricking melted every guitar player on that stage (with the exception of Schon) and it wasn't even close.

As a guitar player, I can hear things being played and understand the technical difficulty of it. That was the night I became fully aware of the mans ability to play.

Even as recently as his 70th birthday concert when joined by John Mayer for a rendition of "Pretending ", Mayer took a pretty long solo followed by Clapton who leveled the stage with only a 45 second solo, Mayer's jaw was hanging open in the middle of the solo.
