Clapton is the Greg McElroy of musicians. He was the benificiary of superior talent around him; Baker, Bruce, Allman, Gordon etc. and just had to not frick it up. Basically Clapton peaked with the solo for While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

If "not frick it up" means creating some of the most iconic solos in the history of guitar, and like Keith Richards coming up with long list of instantly recognizable intro riffs, then yea, you are right.

I never understood the praise for Clapton. I enjoyed some of his work, he's got a smooth style at times. But, I think he thrived off his rep from Cream, and he wasn't even the driving force in that band.
I watched a documentary about him, thinking "Now I'll finally learn why people think he's great." It was just the opposite. I ended up feeling sorry for him.
The guy hung around recording studios looking for people to play with, and people accepted him because of his "Cream" credentials. He joined bands, and they went downhill afterwards.
He was tutored by some of the best musicians out there: Duane Allman, George Harrison, Steven Stills, and the best he came up with was Layla and a Bob Marley remake?
I've heard many better musicians in bars than Eric Clapton. He's got a cult following that can't fathom that he's an average musician.
