But didn't they spend only about 7 days on the line at a time?

Eventually, but only after they were having to execute their own soldiers for going mad, essentially.

That was the idea. But when shite hit the fan they were stuck on the line. For example the Battle of the Bulge they were on the line for months unless they were seriously injured. They would not leave cause they didn't want to leave their brothers behind unless they absolutely had to.
