Who to contact about fixing the lack of drainage in my back yard?

My back yard holds water bad, and when we get a heavy rain the water will run up over my patio, which leads to dirt being left behind. What type of person would be the best to call to come check out my yard and come up with a game plan for getting it to drain better? Would simply adding a few french drains running down the side of the house to the road do the trick?

Yes French drains will work. Or you could put few catch basins in low spots

A landscaper.

If the entire yard holds water, then it is a water problem that extends past your property lines, and will be much harder to fix. if it is water just around your house then you can take steps in your yard to make drainage improvements

This is why I'm unsure of who to talk to. The whole yard holds water, along with other yards on the street. I'm sure a landscape guy would come in and put a few catch basins, a couple french drains, etc. but I'm not sure that would fix the problem.

I'd call the city streets and drainage - might be a ditch plugged up or something if the issue is widespread across multiple yards.

Call a realtor and move to a higher swamp!
