AT&T sucks overseas from what I've seen, but I'm not a customer. My GF got passport for a 10 day trip to Europe, and while she always had coverage, she burned through data doing work (not tethering, mind you) and ended up paying several hundred in overages. It was a disaster.
I was on Google Fi and my monthly bill was maybe 20 bucks above normal. Overseas, Google Fi uses local networks and charges for data at the same rates as at home (10 bucks a gig). It was great in Europe.
For the flip side, I was in a somewhat remote part of a Caribbean island not long ago where AT&T was the only domestic carrier that worked well and Google Fi really didn't work at all.

Definitely don't want to spend way over on data. But I'm wondering if I disable data on the apps that use a lot of data and use wifi when available if I can stretch it out a good bit.
