Lads and mates both come from English/German. Lad dates to past 1250 ad, and is in common use by the 1400's. Mates is middle English and comes from middle German.
A lad (s) of course is a boy or a man, a woman would be a lassie or lass.
Mate can mean both male or female. One can be drinking mates, hunting mates, etc.
